On Sunday we throw on our bags and take off stopping in Bell Fouche South Dakota. We have already decided to skip Devil’s Tower and Bill is lukewarm on Little Bighorn. We ride Route 212 a straight and sparsely populated road. We go by several deceased animals, some small some large. We then pass a pre-deceased deer grazing not 20 feet from the road. We pass more in their natural condition of lying on the side of the road. This is a reminder to be careful. We stop at the Bighorn Battlefield but there is a line to get in and a fee so we do not stop.. We cross over the Little Bighorn River and I get a bit of a goose bump from that.
We stop at a rest area and there is coffee and cold drinks served by a local chapter of Christian Motorcyclists. They are nice people and one is from Cambridge, MA. We chat for a while and head on our way. There was no proselytizing and the effort is appreciated.
We arrive in Red Lodge, Montana and have lunch. Lunch is at Bogart’s but is Mexican. The town has vacancies and is pretty but it is only 3:00 PM. We cannot locate any listing in the AAA book for Cooke City over the Beartooth pass, but decide to forge on anyway.
The Beartooth Pass Road may be the most beautiful road in the United States. Spectacular views combine with hairpin turns for an amazing experience, which should be seen by anyone not suffering from a fear of heights. They should avoid it like the plague. It is a 65 mile trip from Red Lodge to Cook City Montana. This takes us about 1 hour 45 minutes. There is a new Super 8 in Cook City and it has a vacancy. We check in but again no internet service. We walk down the street and find a restaurant that boasts 130 beers. Big drinkers we finish 4 between us and a plate of nachos, the small plate. We are too full for dinner and walk back to the room. However, not without a little bit of strange activity from a Biker babe. She is wearing leather chaps over blue jeans, and a leather top. Many tattoos adorn those parts of flesh we can see. She is friendly in a weird not playing with a full deck way. Her male companion is big but quiet. As she is leaving one of the people she had been chatting with attempted some type of harmless witticism, she becomes instantly and as near as I can figure irrationally angry, but with an air of having seen this before her male friend pulls her away. After they are out of earshot the guy says in all seriousness I think I almost got beat up by a woman, I think he is right.. We have tried calling home but there is no cell service, The mountains are too high around us. Not to fear I have purchased a virtual phone card for this purpose. However, it insists I have not used the correct pin. This is tremendously annoying as I bought the damn thing just for this purpose. I walk down to the gas station, general store and a girl with a stud in her chin, and one in her tongue stops talking long enough on her phone to sell me a card. I am able to reach Carla and announce my continued existence. She is happy with this information. Bill calls BJ also. All is well and we can go to sleep with a clear conscience.
