We had a big breakfast on the ship then tendered to shore and found the shuttle to pick up our rental car. Beside the car rental office was as office for Expedia. We thought we would go see what they could suggest for activities for the two days we had on Maui. We noticed a special on a 'Circle Island' helicopter tour and had her look into availability for us. They had nothing available so she called another company they deal with. For $30 each more ($160ea) she booked us on a tour that afternoon.
We decided to drive the Kahekili Highway around the north coast to the Kahului Airport for our flight. She had warned us that this highway would probably take about 2 hours and was very senic but also a narrow one lane road for a good portion of it. When you came upon oncoming traffic someone would have to quickly find a pulloff or back up to the nearest one. The drive was well worth it.
We had been advised that a dark colored top was best if you planned to take pictures from the helicopter because it would cause less glare off the windows so we ran into a K-Mart and bought a couple of cheap t-shirts. When we got to the heliport they checked us in and then handed us each a bright orange flightsuit. We didn't realize they were sending us up in an open door Hughes 500 aircraft (as seen on Magnum P.I.) They flew us up to the Haleakala Crater but the weather condition (low clouds) didn't allow us to fly down into the crater. We did see the lava tubes, canyons, waterfalls & beautiful coastlines without the obstruction of doors. This was probably the highlite of our vacation.
We headed back to Lahaina after our flight and went to Bubba Gump's for dinner and drinks before heading back to the ship for the night.
Our second day we golfed the Waiehu Municipal Golf Course located right along the coast. Green fees were $50 for us but if you are a year round resident you only pay $8 per round. It was still a great value and a beautiful course. The wind was quite calm while we were there otherwise it would have been a real challenge. After golf we headed to Kaanapali Beach for some snorkling but the conditions were too rough to go out.We did catch a nice sunset before we returned the rental car and the unused snorkle gear we rented in the morning.
