Me and a group of my outdoor cyclist friends just spent an AWESOME weekend at Amelia Island. Our intinerary included a 2 night stay at a great beach front condo - a day of outdoor adventure at Fort Clinch State Park, Dinner in Downtown Fernandina Beach and Nightlife at the Amelia Island Plantations 'Falcon's Nest.'
The highlight of the trip was definitly Saturday at Fort Clinch.
Fort Clinch is one of the most well-preserved 19th century forts in the country. Although no battles were fought here, it was garrisoned during both the Civil and Spanish-American wars. During the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps began preserving and rebuilding many of the structures of the abandoned fort. Daily tours with period reenactors depicting garrison life bring the fort to life for visitors. Sunbathing, swimming, and beachcombing are popular activities at the beach. Anglers can fish from the pier or take advantage of excellent surf fishing. Hikers and bicyclists can enjoy a six-mile trail through the park. Self-guided nature trails provide opportunities to learn about and observe native plants and wildlife. A full-facility campground and a youth camping area provide overnight accommodations
As avid off road bicyclists we LOVED the trails. Traffic is one way for bikers and helmets are required. Parts of the trail are heavily forested and traverse ancient dunes that are very steep, offering a challenge to us coastal off road bicyclists. Wildlife observation is very good on these trails. Alligators, deer, and a variety of bird life were seen in the area.
We can't wait to make another trip and hit the trails, beaches and bars!!!
