Corpus Christi, Texas
5 Stars  This place was Amazing
Mac on the ferry rom Mustang Island to Port Aransas, Texas
Turned out to be a nice day today. I was out of the hotel early to go to the Corpus Christi Harley Davidson to get my tail light fixed. It's a few miles back up South Padre Drive, but I managed to miss it by taking the cross town freeway (I still don't know how that thing works). Anyway it took me out of town across the big bridge over Nueces Bay, which is where the aircraft carrier USS Lexington is anchored. The view from the high bridge is beautiful, even it it was cloudy and windy again today. Turned around and crossed the bridge again, (it's definately worth two trips) this time avoiding the cross town freeway and had no trouble finding the store. Nice dealer, large store with plenty of goodies and many motorcycles for sale. The service department fixed the rail light bracket and I only had to pay the price of a tail light bulb. Back to the motel to pick up Peggy and we headed out to see if we could find a somewhere we would like to move to. We headed East on South Padri Island Drive across another bridge or two, to Padri Island and then turning North on Highway 361 along Padri Island. Followed along Padri Island to Port Aransas. Took a ferry ride on that portion of Highway 361 that crosses onto Mustang Island and then another large bridge and causway over Aransas Bay. Once back on the mainland we headed North on Highway 35 through Rockport and Fulton, crossing another causway and bridge over Copano Bay. Found a place I really liked, a small older development just before the entrance to Goose Bay. I could live there. That is as far North as we cared to see, so we headed back South on Highway 35, stopping to check our Ingleside. Peggy likes Ingleside, but most of the properties in that city restricts mobile homes. A nice little city, but they just don't want any new beautiful mobile homes in amoung the dilapidated shacks I saw in the town. There is a development just outside the city that allows mobile homes. Outside the city is a plus since that means no city tax. (One less govermnent to worry about). We have a Real Estate Agent who happens to be the wife of the Corpus Christi HOG Direcor checking on some properties for us. We'll see what happens. Not really enough Palm Trees here for me and I keep seeing those highway signs the say 'Caution bridge freezes before the road surface'! We'll be headed farther South into Texas on Thursday, down around Brownsville before we make any definate decisions. Plan to be back in this area next month for the Texas State HOG Rally. So we'll see what happens. Back to highway 35 South to Interstate 37 North, and then on to South Padre Island Drive again and on to the motel. Out again for supper at a local Mexican Restaurant and then into the motel for good tonight after a nice sightseeing ride of 173 miles today, 1,679 miles this trip, 150,571 total miles.

Notes from the Rear by Cubbear;

Was another cloudy day when we started out late in the morning. We wanted to ride around the area and check out what the different smaller towns had going for them. There are many older sections and/or homes which is to be expected and gives much character in many areas.

Sure are alot of open spaces and alot of new construction of condos and motels on Mustang Island. Problem there is if a storm comes along, the island is surrounded by water and this land is low...

Riding around, many of the structures were on stilts of some sort - which is common as this is low-lying land in this part of Texas and it stands to reason that stilts would be very important. And after riding around we became more familar with the area and all the different causeways (looked like we were riding towards Key West on one of them) and then the many bridges - one I remember as being quite high.

We found an area that could be interesting for us but not sure if it's a little too far North - we'll have to think about it and look at it again in another month. The more I think about it, it sure is a pretty area.

I look around and see some Palm Trees here and there - but looks like they can be planted almost anywhere. Have to have at least one Palm Tree then I know I'm home. I've been living off the Atlantic Ocean for so many years that it'd be different on the Gulf Coast - the water definitely is not the blue/green of the Atlantic - someone said it's because the wind kicks up the mud but that the fishing is still great.

The skies cleared and became sunny and very nice by the time we were on our way back to the motel in Corpus Christi. A really nice day and glad we had the chance to met and talk with a real estate agent. Learned more about the area. I'm still looking for a 'Publix', laughing but plenty of super Wal-Marts around.
