member icon Abilene, Texas - Day 5

Abilene, Texas
1 Stars  This place was Awful
I would have to say, this was probably one of the lowest points of our trip. We got on the road that day at 9:00 and it was already raining, which means that we had to pack up the camper in the rain. Not only was it raining, but it was cold, the low 50's.

As we drove that day, it just never got any better. Our destination for that day was Palo Duro Canyon State Park in Amarillo, Texas. The brochure of this park looked Grand Canyon-like. I was thinking desert, sun, 80's. As we drove that day, again we were thinking that if we just keep heading west, it will get sunnier. We were about two hours away from our destination and I called the park office to find out what the weather was like. The woman on the phone told me that there was snow on the ground and they were expecting 4 inches tomorrow! It had been 29 years since it had snowed there. We felt like we were stuck in a bad dream. We decided then and there that if going west wasn't going to help, then we would head due south. Even if the skies weren't sunny, at least it would be warmer temps.

We drove for 503 miles that day and pulled into a Motel 6, in Abilene, Texas, at 6:30 that night. The motel room was tiny and not very nice. There was a couple in the room next to us that screamed and yelled all night long. Molly, our new Maltese puppy, was doing great on the trip so far. She slept great in her crate no matter where we were. That night, however, she barked all night long because of the noise coming from the next room. (When I got up to take Molly out in the morning, I saw the guy from the next room sleeping in his car.)

Up to this point I kept telling John that it couldn't get any worse, things will start getting better very soon. I stopped saying that to him. NJL
