After 50 years of visiting big houses one gets a little blasé. We started in the 50's in the mansions at Newport, Rhode Island. We happeded to go to Asheville to see Biltmore because:
1. We had never been there and
2. The Senior Center was running a bus trip.
3. For a summer home, the Vanderbuilts did quite a job, but from a tourist attraction standpoint I can think of several more impressive or more interesting estate houses. More interesting, Monticello. More impressive, San Simeon. In fact, if I were William Randolph Hearst and owned San Simeon, I don't think I would want Biltmore as a guest house on the property.
But, if you are in the area, it is worth the price of admission. Check out their website for more pictures and details.
The picture of the front entrance shows bus load of people entering. The other picture, which I like the best of those I took, is out on sort of a terrace overlooking the gardens.
