Good thing the checkout time at the motel in Kalispell was 12:00AM. At 11:00AM it was still only 47 degrees, but at least it was partly cloudy with plenty of sun. Out of the motel at around 11:30, under cloudy skies (how quickly the weather can change here) with a storm brewing right over our heads. Slight rain as we pulled out of the motel turning North on Highway 93 and then East on Highway 2 towards West Glacier Park, quickly leaving the rain and clouds behind us. Weather got a little warmer as we progressed towards West Glacier Park, then it started to get real cold as we ascended the mountain. Several times dark clouds threatened rain and sometimes we got a drop or two. Near the summit we could see that some of the mountain was covered with clouds and occassionally we would see a snow flake or two. As we entered Marias Pass (5,216 feet) we found plenty of snow. As we pulled into East Glacier Park gasoline station to refuel, it started snowing real hard and got extremely cold. Didn’t last too long though, just long enough to make me wonder what I was doing up here. After leaving East Glacier Park and the mountain behind us, we still were surrounded by snow for as far as the eye could see. This heavy snow was the reason that we had to spend the 4 days in Kalispell. East Glacier Park had received 14 inches on Tuesday and there was plenty of snow left on the ground all the way to Shelby. Although we didn’t get very far into Glacier National Park, Peggy says she’s seen all she wants to see of it. Me too, I’m ready for some sun. This cold weather making us hit the road late and stop early cuts into our mileage. Into the motel around 3:30PM after only 156 miles today, 10,952 miles this trip, 132,612 total miles.
