Peggy in Apalachicola National Forest
Gainsville, Florida, Monday, May 23rd, 2005. Another longer ride planned for today and we would loose an hour as we crossed back into the Eastern Time Zone. Leaving around 9:00AM again we headed South on Highway 71 which would lead us to Blountstown where we turned East on Highway 20 and then Southeast on Highway 267 to Wakulla. At Wakulla we turned South on Highway 363 for three miles and then East on Highway 98 which would carry us to Perry. Along the way we stopped and got a picture of the sign for Apalachicola National Forest, a sign we needed for the ABC's of Touring. At Perry we changed to Highway 27 which would carry us under Interstate 75, through Alachua and onto Highway 441 and into Gainsville to our motel, the Comfort Inn University at 2435 S.W. 13 Street (Highway 441). Ended up in a small, handicap room, not very nice, highspeed wireless internet (that did not work). And would you believe this one cost us 12,000 Reward Points!! We won't be staying here again. Took Peggy out to supper to a Mexican Restaurant and it wasn't very nice either. Think we need to by-pass Gainsville in the future as we've never managed to find a good motel or good restaurant. I've noticed one thing about restaurants. If the parking lot is dirty and not kept up the inside of the restaurant, the service and the food will not be very good either. This also holds true for motels and service stations.
View from the Rear by Peggy:
Sunny day again - we sure are catching up on a tan - and we decided to ride a different route and get off of I-10.
From Marianna we rode South on Hwy 71 through Altha; then East on Hwy 20 crossing into the Eastern Time Zone - yeahhh, now my watch is correct - rode over the Apalachicola River through towns of Bristol and Hosford over the Ochlockonee River; turned right onto Hwy 267 past Hwy 319 to town of Wakulla on Hwy 363 for a short distance where we turned left and continued East on Hwy 98 over I-27, through town of Perry where we continued East on Hwy 27 through towns of Mayo and Branford, over the Suwannee River; through towns of Fort White and High Springs; then under I-75 through town of Alachua and South onto Hwy 441 into Gainsville, Florida. Those were many, many back roads...
Much of the area we rode through is full of pine trees of all sizes and much of the area is surrounded by various State and National Forests...
We have been at this motel before - hope in the future we find another one which is new in a smaller town... In the afternoon we stopped in a Mexican Restaurant and of course I didn't get what I ordered... After this I'm either going to shout it out or write it down for the waitress - we've always had bad experiences in this college town...
