South Lake Tahoe, California
3 Stars  This place was Average
Two days at Heavenly and one at Squaw. The only real complaint I have is about getting to Tahoe. We took the evening flight from NYC to Sacramento (SMF). Jet Blue flies that direct - tho we took United. Drove from SMF to Tahoe - didn't get in until just after 2am. The Jet Blue flight would've shaved mebbe 1 hour off of this. Either way, for an East Coaster, that means you're getting in at 4am or 5am - neither is particularly great. Leaving, meanwhile, meant either taking a red-eye or leaving at the crack of dawn (6a flights). We opted for the red-eye. In all the travel was a pain - and that's mostly re: the driving. The flights were $200 RT, so that was great - but way more driving than if we'd gone to Utah - and flights cost about the same.

So, how about the skiing and the nightlife? Well, the skiing was good. Squaw was a ton of fun. Heavenly, a bit less so. The sun was great. The warmth was great. The two complaints about Heavenly are that: 1. I wish there were more advanced terrain; 2. the food costs SO much. Even with the ltd advanced terrain at Heavenly, tho, the mountain still had some spots that kicked my butt. Squaw, tho, was definitely the best for continue variety and challenge. I heard great things about Kirkwood - unf., Kirkwood closed a lot of their lifts due to high winds.

The nightlife in Tahoe was fine. The craps tables certainly were fun. Dinner, tho, was only ok. All said, if I'm traveling from the East Coast again, I think I'd pick Alta / Utah, but this certainly isn't a bad place to end up.
