Sausalito, California
4 Stars  This place was Great
Sausilito
TUES - We arrived at our Youth Hostel at Marin Headlands after a few wrong turns ! It is a lovely hostel, only 10mins from San Francisco, but in the middle of open land. It is an old military base, so all the buildings are identical. The hostel is huge and was desterted, we were in a 20 bed dorm by ourselves ! The kitchen and living/dining room was huge and it was one of the friendliest hostels we stayed in, the other people staying there were lovely and we enjoyed just chilling out in the evening and chatting to them. Marin headland is just over the Golden Gate Bridge and we stood and watched the hundreds of cyclists coming across the bridge from the city to go cycling in the hills. Mountain biking is meant to have originated here and I guess the Marin make of bikes must have their origins here.

WED - A lazy start before popping in to the Marin Headlands tourist museum. Today we really experienced the strange weather phenomenom that exists around San Francisco, on the north west of the headland the weather is hot and sunny, however when this warm air hits the headland hills it turns into thick fog which rolls across the bay and covers San Francisco making it very cold and damp ! We drove east to Sausilito a lovely town across the bay from San Francisco. You can still see its bohemian artistic roots, but now it is prime commuter land for the city. We ended the day eating fish and chips watching the sun set across the bay.

THURS - Today we drove north to Point Reyes to visit the San Andreas fault line and learn more about earthquakes in this area. The huge earthquake in 1906 shifted the ground by about 5m and we were amazed at the old photos they had of before and after the earthquake. We then headed back to San Francisco and crossed the Golden Gate bridge into the city to our final hostel of the trip.

San Andreas fault line - this fence used to be in a straight line !
