jottes76 icon Santa Rosa, California - overgrown but still has pockets of charm

Santa Rosa, California
3 Stars  This place was Average
I lived in Santa Rosa for a few years back in the early 90s and still go back regularly to visit family. It has experienced a population boom and a result, there are now way too many strip malls and housing developments. However, it still has a relatively cozy downtown area and its proximity to the Bay Area keeps a lively local cultural scene going. Wander down 4th St and check out Treehorn Books, a good used bookstore. There are also a lot of unique shops and cafes to stop at along the way. Railroad Square on the other side of the monstrous Santa Rosa Plaza mall also offers some good stores. Good local places to eat in the general vicinity of downtown are Traverso's (European style deli and food market, good wine deals too), Arragon's cafe on 4th St (great soups and sandwiches), Mac's deli across from Treehorn Books, and further down 4th St away from the mall, try Superburger for delicious cooked to order burgers or Pepe's for Mexican.
