The Monterey Bay Aquarium
This was one stop that was on the top of my list. I had heard from working at the Vancouver Aquarium that the Monterey Bay Aquarium was one the best in North America, and maybe in the world. It did not disapoint.
We got up early and headed to the Aquarium first thing. It was an awesome sight. The building was huge, and very well laid out by oceanic zones. They had great displays of jellies, kelp forrest ecosystems, shore birds, touch tanks with rays, and my favorite... open ocean fish. I got my first look at a Mola Mola, or sunfish; which, although this one seemed big, can get to be the size of a Volkswagen. They are also one of the first aquariums to sucessfully display a Great White shark, which are notorious for not surviving in captivity. There were also many large Tuna in the exhibit, and we had the fortune of watching a feeding. It is impressive the power of those large fish.
All in all, it was a great day at the aquarium... and Kelly did a great job keeping a smile on while I dragged her around excitedly from one window to the next.
