Phoenix (O'odham: Skikik) is the capital, largest city and largest metropolitan area in the state of Arizona, United States. Phoenix is ranked: the sixth-largest city in the U.S., with a population of 1,321,045 (as of the 2000 census); recent estimates (1,418,041 as of 7/1/2004) show that Phoenix may soon surpass Philadelphia (with 1.5 million by 7/1/2006) as the fifth-largest city in the United States.

Phoenix was incorporated on February 5, 1881. It is the county seat of Maricopa County and the principal city of the Phoenix metropolitan area.
Phoenix is called Hoodzo (lit. 'the place is hot') in Navajo (a language spoken in Arizona & New Mexico) and Fiinigis in Western Apache (a language spoken in Arizona).
