We got up early and joined a guided tour to the northern part of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, just south of Tulum ($68 each). This trip was a little pricey, but worth it. Manuel, the knowledgeable and amiable tour guide, introduced us to the rest of the group, which included people from Australia, Sweden, and Germany, and we were off down an extremely bumpy road to the wetlands to see some birds and interesting land and water formations. For much of the trip, we took a motorboat from lagoon to lagoon through a narrow river and saw a small Mayan ruin (but no bats inside). We then got out of the boats and watched them speed away, and we sat on our life jackets and drifted for about 20 minutes as the current took us to our boats. After the journey, we had a traditional Yucatecan meal at the reserve's visitor center, gathered our stuff at Papaya Playa, and rode off into town to return our bikes and find a meal. But first, we found an inexpensive room at Chilam Bilam on the main strip, and then we rode to the San Francisco de Asis grocery store for some more of the tasty buns we first found in Playa del Carmen (these buns were our main sustenance throughout the trip). After returning the bikes to Iguana, we ate at a pretty good restaurant called Don Cafeto's, which came recommended to us by others on the biosphere tour. The night ended with some people-watching along with some flan and more sweet buns from a bakery across the street from the hotel.
