I grew up in Southern California and have spent years in this region. It is my home away from home. I own Real estate and a catamaran here and love the locals. I learned Spanish growing up in California. The Healthcare is no beter or worse than in the U.S. and the food is cheap. I use filtered water and have collected rain water and filtered it from the roof. Solar power is the way to go.....just down hook up any blow dryers. It is best to do your banking electronically and to have a locked garge for your car. Small cars are better as they don't draw alot of attention whereas my Dad's Rolls draws lots of stares and the cops used to follow him around until they met him and liked him.
Get to know the people and get involved in the community. When I stopped surfing and diving alot I really got to know the locals.
Be a friend, get involved and don't be a jerkwad American and you will have a great time!
