Old Doha ... the Mansour district
Doha is so obviously trying to copy Dubai. Although set on a nice sweeping bay - with Palm Island* just offshore - Doha is quite small and has a poor transit infrastructure.
Two major air conditioned malls are Landmark and City Centre (or Center - the spelling varies) which are the social hubs of the city during the hot summer days. Lots of US fast food outlets, including many most outside America have never heard of: Chili's, Bennigans, and others.
The highlight was a 4WD journey across the dunes near the Saudi border. Cost is a bit steep: QAR300 (USD82) per person for a seven-hour trip including a barbecue dinner.
* On Friday, only 'families' - i.e. couples with and without children - can visit the island. No men singly or in groups.
