Well I have arrived for a month´s stay in Madrid, attending my favorite school, Don Quijote, and living with another family. What a change from San Sebastían and Santiago de Compostela. It is of course huge and active. Unfortuantely my first week robbers took two of my backpacks. I hope I learned something, but they are in deed masters of distraction. The worst is I lost all my photos from the Basque Country.

So far the museums alone are worth the effort to be here. The Thyssen Museum has great variety but I was especially moved by a life size face to face encounter with the 15th century vision of Christ Resurrected. Suddenly I was just inches away. There is now a great exhibition of paintings of the last 2 months of Van Gough´s life before he suicided. Unfortunately they don´t permit photos, if you like this. The Prado of course is great and now has exhibition of Patinir, the father of landscape. I guess that makes the prior landscape painters the grandfathers of landscape. The National Museum of Regina Sofia for me has little interest outside Picaso. There are some interesting films. But generally this type of modern art doesn´t move me. The Museum of the Acadamey of Fine Arts (Bellas Artes) is superb. It is not crowded and has many famous artists including Goya, Picaso, Van Gough, Rubens. If you study Spanish they let you in free. The Cathedral is interestingly modern. There are monuments without end, including an Egyptian temple 2200 years old (Templo de Debod).

My favorite museum is the Casa Museo de Sorolla. I was lucky to read a small article about Sorolla in June, so I knew who he was. His style is very clear and open and is like a great meal for you eyes.

My classes the first 2 weeks had only 2-3 students and professors are quite good. And of course there are interesting students from over the world. In the last 2 weeks there was a full class of 8 students and great conversations. They tell me my level is C2.

Great news from home. Paul tells me they are expecting a boy in Jan.
