Leaving the delightfully named Trani (no hidden urges, just a nice town to spend a few days in) for Bari and the overnight ferry, Paris decided to give us a small heart attack by not starting. In what became the first of a few episodes (before the starter motor was finally repaired in Croatia) we called for roadside assistance and waited half and hour before giving the car one last try, only to have her kick into life with that familiar roar. Determined that ignorance would be bliss we set out for the Castel del Monte, a perfectly octagonal building with eight octagonal towers. No one knows why it was built, what purpose it serves, or why the design was chosen. With no defences, no strategic position and no history of anyone ever living in it, the best theory is that it is a geometric symbol of the relationship between man and god.
Holding our breath while we started Paris again (ignorance may be bliss but mechanics make for better peace of mind!) we were soon on our way to Bari, arriving early to make sure that we wouldn’t miss the ferry. As it turns out, thanks to a fairly inaccurate check in person, we went pretty close to missing it anyway, waiting outside a permanently locked fence for what would have been a short drive onto the ferry, only to finally work out the correct route (right around the back of the docks and through customs) that had us in the right place just in time!
Hayley wasn’t inspired by the ‘Manly ferry’ size of this international Jadrolinia Lines ferry but armed with a ‘get to sleep before it starts rocking’ strategy was hoping for the best.
