'WELCOME TO ITALY!!' is still ringing in my ears after the most hilarious train adventure of my life. Right now Im sitting in an Italian resturant in.........ITALY!!! I have ordered my first Milano beer and spaggetti bolognase with extra cheese only minutes ago! Why am I in Milano at 5pm on a wednesday afternoon? Well after leaving Traunstien at 7.16am this morning I departed for Geneve, my well planned journey should have got me there at 16.42, but then came Italy! Noone I have found so far here speaks English (or chooses not to) and my troubles began 5 mins after crossing the border. 'Tickets Please?'.. No problem, I had my Eurail pass. 'Reservation Please?'. Well I had my reservation fro the following two trains I was to get but not this one I was on! The ticket guy didnt speak english really, but I knew he wanted money. I was charged only 15 euro so I didnt complain. Turns out the fine for no ticket is much larger compared with one for no reservation. Upon arrival in Verona (yes people, Fair Verona), I rushed to the ticket counter as I knew I only had 20 mins to change a reservation ticket that was for an incorrect train given to me by the German ticket office in Rosenhiem. I noticed the ticket was wrong when I got it but with only a 12min connection in Rossenhiem, I didnt have the time to fix the issue with the ticket lady. Now at Verona it was haunting me. Even though a nice Itailan man let me push into the front of the line (posso? I said) I still ran out of time trying to speak Itailan with the ticket office and explain my situation. My charades needed work....

Running back to the platform with 'milano' on it, I jumped on the train and confirmed with TWO other people that it was the train to Milano. At 13.30 I got concerned as my ticket said the train was supposed to leave at 13.19. An english speaking local told me 'Thats Itailian trains for you, never on time!'. I wasnt too concerned as I knew I had now missed the very train departing Milano for Geneve that I was trying to change my reservation for! (I had only allowed a 15min connection). 10mins into the trip I realised the train was stopping at every station instead of being express. I then reaslised, with the help of the ticket man that I was on the wrong train, the slow boat! Suddenly I realised I might miss the 16.25 train from Milano (the one I did have a reservation for) and got concerned. 'no problemo' says the ticketman, 'we arrive in Milano at 15.45, plenty of time!' (think of heavy italian accent). I relaxed until the train spent an unusal amount of time 2 stops from Milano. There was an announcement in Itailian and everyone stood up and got off the train! Alone, I quickly repacked my bag and caught up with the crowd. THey boarded another train nearby. On board, I found a man who spoke broken english/german and he told me the other train was Kaputt and we now take a slower train. I then found out the train I was on didnt go to the centrale station!! To cut a long story short I ended up on a metro in the middle of Milano not knowing where I was or where I was going. When I realised Id missed my 16.25 train to Geneve on cue a guy got on the train, stood next to me in the crowded metro and started playing the accordian he was holding. It was an eelectronic accordian too that made classic circus music - so appropriate! 'Welcome to Italy!!' the man I was following said over the top of the chaos. He was the same guy who I had kinda explained my situation to on the train and offered to take me to the metro. Just before he got off the train, he told me to get off in two stops. So I was left alone, with the circus music and my backpack. I can tell you, I got some weird looks when I started to laugh uncontrollably, but oddly I felt as though I fit right in. I think Im going to like ITALY. Its like organised Chaos.

My train is at 18.25 from Milano and I should arrive in Genieve sometime around 10pm. Should be interesting as I have no booking and dont even know where the hostel is.... haha. I love travelling!
