The ship docked very close to the walled city of Rhodes, so we walked over there on our own. One of our destinations was the synagogue in Rhodes, so we went directly to the Jewish Quarter. Rhodes had a jewish population of 4,000 before WWII. Thousands left before the German occupation, 1,400 were shipped to concentration camps, less that 100 survived, and there are now seven Jewish families on Rhodes. The synagogue survives on tourists, and is developing a nice museum of Jewish life in Rhodes. There's also a memorial in the square.
We went to the castle museum, then found the tourist tram that drove us around the rest of the city. None of the beaches seemed easily reachable. Lunch in town was a disappointment - better Greek food in New York!
