Corfu, Greece
5 Stars  This place was Amazing
Achillion Palace
Corfu is lovely, greener than the other Greek islands I have visited. If you plan to go, do research into where the sandy beaches are...all the beaches are clean and lovely turquoise water, but the pebbles are a bit painful on bare feet!

The guide book I had made no mention of Lefkimi in the South, it has a large sandy beach occupied almost entirely by locals - I think they don't mention in the books in order to keep the tourists from finding it!

Ermones beach is also lovely.

Kalami was a great place to stay, I was looking to soak up the culture and stayed in an apartment higher up the hill from the beach. We had no swimming pool but it didn't matter - we had a hire car that we picked up from the airport on our arrival - and went to many beaches under our own steam.

The temperatures were mega hot, air conditioning would have been beneficial, but we managed with the door open on to the balcony and an electric fan!

Opposite our apartment was a taverna called Dimitris, we tried it on the last night, they took pity on us as we were late trying to find dinner - it was gone midnight - and the staff were kind enough to open the kitchen for us. We wished we had gone there sooner, the food was excellent and there was a lovely verandah looking over the bay.

Corfu town retains a lot of character...if you are driving in to the city parking can be a pain, try parking along the coast road that is the route into the centre that takes you through the old fortress and back to the north of the island.

The Liston esplanade is a really nice place to sit and have a drink, and didnt seem to be overpriced (given that it is one of the tourist must sees).

If you are a fan of desserts the options in Corfu were a bit lacking...Baklava is the local speciality, which is essentially puff pastry with honey and nuts drizzled over it...not really my bag. I was also once served something described to me as a cake like dessert, but when it arrived it was a coconut sticky block...again I am not a fan of coconut so given it was the staple of the dish wished that had have been mentioned! Ice cream is prevalent as a dessert dish.

The rest of the Greek food was gorgeous, Tzatziki, Houmous, Taramasalata, Dolmades, Kalamari, Moussaka, Souvlaki etc etc.
