Today we drove the 100-minute route from Helsinki to Tampere (Tammerfors is the Swedish name), which looks a lot like the densely wooded highway drives in Wisconsin or Illinois.
If you look closely at the trees as you pass by, you can see that they have been planted in rows. The Finns are very conscientious about preserving their forests - they've even helped rejuvinate dying woodlands in western Russia. You'll pass three sections of trees - full-grown forests, sparsely-leafed adolescent patches, and the shorter new crops.
Tampere itself has cool water rapids running through the center of the city, which they've directed into canals, waterfalls and beautiful parks. Two lakes snuggle around the city, and since it's one of the hilliest places in Finland's fairly flat country, the houses are in less danger of flooding.
You can also see red buildings built on very tall stilts, like giant birdfeeders in the sky. Ammunition companies used to make bullets in these buildings, by dropping the material down the stilts and high speeds.
