Palaea Paphos, Cyprus

This place was Great

We travelled to Cyprus to visit basketmakers and exchange ideas. We travelled there under the Leonardo EU cultural project and stayed at Paphos. Our main contact was at the Akrotiri Environmental Centre. Tomas was our interpreter for phone calls to cypriot weavers who didn't speak English.
Paphos tourist area is like Blackpool with sun and heat. tacky and full of Brits rapidly turning scarlet with sunburn. a friend called it the land of 1000 restaurants, all selling crap food. However just a few miles away from the boozy centre there are great places to visit and eat and drink at.
we travelled all around the south of Cyprus as we had a car. The Akamas peninsular is amazing and the Lara beach is all sand, no amenities and turtle nests. Polis and Pomos are great laid-back towns. we got to Pomos when the jazz festival was on, it was magic to hear eastern-flavoured music as the sun was setting!
Paphos is great for a cheap place to stay as long as you have a car to escape and explore.
