Sulphur clouds from Masaya Volcano
David Dickinson would have been very disappointed with our bargain hunting skills! Visiting Masaya market we managed to not spend any money on overpriced tack, it was more of a tourist trap than a market and you sort of knew it was a little phoney when all the market traders offered the service of payment by credit card, cash and travellers cheques. Needless to say we kept our money firmly in our pockets and were not tempted, much!
But after the let down of the market we then camped overnight in the Masaya Volcano National Park, this was really cool as the volcano is still active and you can go right up to the lip of the crater and peer in. Allegedly this is also home to some rare green parrots but obviously they heard that we were coming and decided to hide.
After a good nights sleep disturbed only by the torrential rain, thunder and lightning as well as the worry of did we really peg down the tent well enough or would end up very wet we went bak to the volcano. Here we were able to go on a Bat Cave walk, taken by a guide 200 metres into a lava pipe that was created over 300 years ago. Firstly we saw lots of bats and secondly with lots of bats come lots of bat crap which I think I managed to bring most of it out of the cave either on shoes, socks, legs, t-shirts or rucksack, basically I was covered in bat crap! But it was cool none the less, however Caroline freaked out and decided to run from the cave where in her fear induced state failed to notice the big snake that she then nearly trod on!
We then went onto Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua. The only good thing about this place is when you actually see the 'You are now leaving Managua' sign, less said the better! But now we are in the lovely town of Leon...
