Left Anchorage, Alaska at 5pm Feb 8, 2006 flying non-stop to Miami arriving at 6am. Changed flights and flew to Managua, Nicaragua arriving noon Feb 9. Mom, my travel companion, had arrived the day before and so she and the van from our hotel were there to meet me. So nice not to have to scramble around looking for a ride and hotel upon arrival.
It is hot and very humid after leaving a very dry and cold Alaska. We arrived at the hotel in about 10 minutes and I saw for the first time the beautiful wood rocking chairs that are made in Nicaragua and you will find in EVERY household on the porch as well as inside as household furniture in front of the TV. I was in love with them at first sight. Later I found you could purchase one for $30!!! Of course, shipping would break the bank. Still, one could lust. Our room was the first of a typical type of room we would inhabit for the rest of the trip with minor variations. Clean enough, rather run down, worn, shabby. But for us, clean is the defining factor of an acceptable room. Mom also was very critical of the sheet....were they put on the bed correctly, thickness...and also the mattress. Pretty much all mattresses we encountered from the real thing to foam, were fairly thin and sometimes rather hard. Minor discomforts. At this hotel, The Nicaragua Guest House, we also had a bath included. No hot water, but who cares, it is so hot we wouldn't touch the hot water anyways. That afternoon we drank beer and plotted our path for our stay in Nicaragua.
We decided to get out of the big city immediately as we prefer smaller communities and so left the next morning for Leon.
