The good thing about a weekend in Borocay is that it's within Monday morning commuting distance to Manila. The bad thing is that the boat to the airport leaves the hotel at 5:30 AM. Worse yet, unlike the ankle-deep water level at our arrival, the water level for departure was, for someone vertically challenged such as myself, THIGH-HIGH!! No way to roll up pants for that. So I just waded in, fully clothed. My khakis were only finally becoming dry when we arrived at our hotel in Manila. Rather uncomfortable.
We got to see the sun come up during our boat ride to the airport, which was nice. When we arrived at the airport, the Southeast Asia Airline employee had not yet arrived, so we couldn't check in. We were encouraged to wait in the airport lounge area. Which was outdoors, underneath some tent-like structures! I insisted, of course, on capturing the scene, as you'll see in the photo. Also visible in the photo is my little pink bag. It was the only bag I had other than my huge suitcase, so I managed to stuff my entire weekend wardrobe in that little bag! What's less visible in the photo is the line at my thigh where my khakis went from dripping wet to more-or-less dry. Good times.
I neglected to mention that the previous night, we'd had dinner at a Spanish tapas place. It had sounded good in theory, though the food wasn't all that great. The scene was really destroyed, though, by three really loud, obnoxious guys at the table next to us. Imagine our surprise and 'delight' when the same idiots showed up at the airport lounge area and were on our flight. To make matters worse, they seated all of us in the back rows of the plane, leaving the front six rows or so completely empty. So we were nice and close to the continuing obnoxious conversations and behavior.
When one of the guys asked if he could move up (hooray!), the flight attendant denied his request (ugh), saying that we needed to keep the nose light for take-off. Okay.... She wasn't joking. I can't remember when I've experience such an accelerated take-off or rapid ascent. Apparently the runway's not very long.... Nevertheless, we made it back to Manila safely and were in the office by about 9 AM. Nice commute.
