Dutch Ulf in the Peace Park
After spending a few chilled days in Hiroshima, checking into the so far most luxurious hostel...sorry Youth House so far and loving having my own room and a bed...aaah, slept better than ever, i was again ready to move on. I just waited to receive the rest of my stuff which Hiro had kindly looked after in Ogaki, before getting back on the road. As i was killing time, i wandered over to the free internet location by the Peace Park and spotted the first other cycle tourer so far [well aside from one japanese guy who was going in the opposite direction and waiving was the only communication between us]. So i legged it across the park behind him, like in some really bad Tom Hanks movie, until he finally stopped by a monument and saw me running and grinning...as you can imagine, he didnt look too impressed. It is quite funny how you cant mistake a cycle tourer for anything else, yet before this trip i would never even have noticed one and now it made my day, ha ha. We had a coffeetogether and Ulf from Holland, told me about his travels by bike form Holland to Tokyo to see his sister...and i was particularly impressed wit his daily average of 160-70km...whoaaa, totally put me to shame. Having alrked on for a bit i thought id better let him get on, and wandered back to the hsotel to get yet another bag to try to fit on the bike....challenge!
I wasnt really sure where i was going, all i knew was that i needed to head south. A few hours later i was cruising along in the scorching heat wondering whether it was better to lose your skin due to being soaked in the rain for days or from sunburn, as i was slowly frying away in the midday 30 degree sun turning a bright shade of lobster...ouch!
I stopped at a few sights, like the Iwakuni Bridge where two kind american army boys kindly pointed out just how red i was, just after i had applied another layer of my factor 50 sunblock that makes you go practically white...nice.
91km later i was in Shunan...or Tokuyama, depending on which signs you choose to read...where i was thinking of getting a ferry the next day. After intially trying to book myself into a love hotel....i know i know i should have known by the name Moonlight something...but i was very tired and got turned away as i was alone, doh, and found mydelf a suitably grubby cheap business hotel that smelled very bad but hey, it had a shower and a bed yay! A sushi later i was wiped out by 9pm, rock n roll or what?
