Naturally heated saunas in Beppu
I will have to agree that this city is just right. It is about the same physical size of my hometown (Buffalo, NY) with 3x the population. There is a small town feel to it and you just don't feel rushed going or doing anything. Costs of meals are on par with what you would find in a US city of comparable size. A trip to the surrounding area and nearby Beppu is a must. Do take advantage of the onsen. I'm looking forward to my next trip.
