Went for a trip to Swaziland, the last remaining absolute monarchy in Southern Africa. The country is tiny and almost completely surrouned by South Africa. The king, Mswati III, has 10 wives, each with their own palace and new BMW. He's heavily criticised for his excessive lifestyle--last week he pulled up to parliament in a new stretch mercedes limo to deliver his state of the kingdom address, in which he vowed to fight poverty.
Guilt aside, Swaziland was gorgeous. Really mountainous and green. The capital, Mbabane, isn't much to look at, but we stayed in Mlilwane nature reserve. The first morning, I woke up and saw an ostrich preening right outside my door. Sadly I didn't get to see any hippos or crocodiles, of which there are many, but I did see gorgeous waterfalls in Malolotcha (sp?) and lots of other animals wandering around near our hostel. There was a bit of an uncomfortable 'traditional dance' on our first evening, but the dancers seemed to be having a good time and ignoring the white, european audience (mostly dutch and german). More pictures to follow, if I ever finish my roll of film.
