Arrived in Morocco and was hit by the heat. It is dry and hot and there is no breeze in Marrakesh. Hotel called Moroccon House is good. Really typical Moroccon style decor etc. We cruised into the markets in the afternoon for a bit of orientation. First we went to the Assemble General Artisanal to check out ruffly what prices should be, and then had dinner at the hotel. We spent the next few days shopping in the markets for bowls, jewellery, scarves, and spent a morning with a guy in a shop looking at carpets. There is absolutely no question that we paid too much. Anna made friends with him and it all went $$ bad from there but hey I guess it has to happen at some stage. The souks are dirty and crowded with soo much stuff. The stuff however is all the same from shop to shop and it seems hard to see how they make a $$. Heaps of it is made in India etc but they tell you its made there. We went out round the back into some of the workshops and it was nice to see that at least some of it was being made there.
The men are foul and you really just switch off to what is being said and keep walking. Have picked up a couple of bowls, scarfs and a set of hand painted glasses other than that its just too hard to carry back.
The food has been alright. By far the best was at a wee cafe called Chez Hicham in Gueliz just around the corner from our hotel. The prune, beef & almond tagine is the best.
Its great to see the spice stands in the souks but once you have seen one it really is just like a picture and you dont need to see them all. And besides its not like you can take them back home with you.
