Bafatá is the second largest town in Guinea-Bissau with a population of 10,000. It is located in the remote interior territory, on the bank of Rio Geba, some 150 kms east of Bissau.
The birthplace of national hero Amílcar Cabral is a surprisingly quiet spot. As proof of the country's colonial past, old Portuguese-style houses proudly flank the narrow streets. The town is perched on a hill overlooking the Rio Geba. 12 kms west of Bafatá there's a historical site, the ruins of Geba, an ancient Portuguese trade post.
