Accra, Ghana

I am now a student at the University of Ghana, in Legon, a little north of Accra, and will be here until December 16th. I am living with a great family off-campus, so I get to battle it out in the trotros to and from school. Now that I'm living off campus, I can get really excited about Ghanaian culture, food, etc. and get to know locals, which is really nice!!
I will be starting this week to volunteer as a primary school teacher in a rural village about an hour or so away. And, next Monday I will return to Buduburam (Liberian Refugee Camp) and possibly start work with the Welfare Council (liaison between the people and the government) and social work... So much to discover...
Classes can be very frustrating to figure out where to get readings etc... but I have some interesting ones (rural sociology, rural resource development, agricultural land use theories and policies, and school social work). I am also auditing a Twi language class, and having loads of fun in my drumming class!!!
Its the little things that I find most rich about being here... Meeting a Ghanaian who I know and having a nice conversation. Waving at cute children on the road who return the most precious smiles you've ever seen. Being laughed at and/or helped by awesome ladies on the tro tro. Getting a great hug from Selasi or Marilyn at home. Being asked 'Ete sen?' in Twi by a random guard at the bank, whose very impressed and shakes my hand with a click when I answer 'Eye'. etc... just the little rich interactions with Ghanaians that make my days!
