An agricultural area surrounds this large lake which was once fed from the Nile by a canal. On the lake shore there is an auberge that once hosted Churchill and Chiang-kai-Chek for a WWII meeting. The city of Al-Fayum was once the site of Crocodopolis. Now those amphibia are no more, squeaky waterwheels are now its chief attraction.
